Students to be required to learn more English: MOE
The Ministry of Education (MOE) plans to add more English vocabulary and phrases to the textbooks for elementary and junior high school students beginning next year.
All pupils of the third grade in primary schools across Taiwan will start learning English in the new academic year beginning in September 2005. This is one year earlier than their peers who are mostly required to take up English courses from the fourth grade as now.
Under the current system, all graduates from elementary schools are required to spell or write at least 80 English words and phrases plus the use of 200 words and phrases in colloquial language. According to the new plan, the numbers will be raised to 120 and 300 respectively.
Junior high school graduates are required to command a minimum of 1,000 words and phrases in terms of listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
The MOE tentatively plans to raise the figure to 1,200 while some scholars suggest the level should be further elevated so that the youngsters can lay a more solid foundation with wider scope of knowledge about the English language.
All the textbooks to be used by the students will be revised accordingly.
The new MOE plan could mean that many children in Taiwan will have to spend more time in language classes after formal hours in schools.
