COMMENTARY
English Not Spoken Here
After Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule in 1997, one of the first
acts of the new administration was to downgrade the importance of
English as a medium of instruction in local secondary schools. Clearly
intended as a show of patriotism to the central government in Beijing
and a jab at the former colonial rulers, this move put Hong Kong out
of step with the rest of China, which is zealously expanding English
education. It also violated the wishes of the population -- weeping
parents and students protested, to no avail, when their schools were
forced to switch to Cantonese.
