THE COCK AND THE SUN

One day, the animals and the birds started complaining
about the Sun. “He is too hot,” said the crow. “Yes, I
wish he never appears in the sky.” This was the proud
peacock, gazing at his colourful feathers. “How nice
it would be without the Sun,” brayed the donkey.

The Sun, who was passing through the sky, heard this.
His bright red face turned redder with anger. “How
dare they speak thus about me! I shall teach them all
a lesson. I shall never appear in the sky.”

The next day, the Sun never appeared in the sky. The
animals and the birds felt very happy. “Hurrah, it's
so cool and nice without him.” They danced in joy. But
after a few days, the animals and the birds found it
difficult to manage their way about in the darkness.
“Why aren't your leaves green anymore?” asked the cow
to the trees. “Without the Sun, we can no longer be
green. Our leaves will no longer be as tasty as they
used to be.”

The only creatures who still felt happy were the Mole,
the Owl and the Bat. The Mole said, “I don't have to
stay underground anymore. I shall stay above the
ground now that the Sun does not appear in the sky.”
The Owl said, “I can hunt mice and other tiny
creatures easily. They cannot escape from me now. They
are helpless in the dark.” The Bat sang,
“I shall hang
I shall hang
I shall hang from every tree
For the day I see
Is dark as night to me”

Soon, the animals and the birds understood the
importance of the Sun. So they went to meet the Sun.
“Hmmm... what do you want?” asked the Sun, angrily.
“My Lord, please forgive us for having spoken badly of
you. Please appear in the sky so that life may go on
as usual.” But the Sun did not listen to them. “You
must be punished for your pride. May you all suffer
without me. Go away from here.” The animals and the
birds returned, disappointed.

They joined together and wondered what to do.
Suddenly, the fox came up with an idea. “Let's send
the cock to meet the Sun. He never complains about
anybody and he likes the Sun very much. In fact, he
was not present when we were talking ill of the Sun.”
Everyone agreed.

The cock then went to see the Sun. He stood at the
entrance of the Sun's palace and crowed loudly.

“You are our life
You are our light
You are our Saviour
You are our friend
We will all die
If you don't come in the sky.”

The Sun was extremely pleased. “I shall surely appear
in the sky and when I do so, you will be the first to
sing and welcome me. Here, take this crown as a reward
for your song.” Saying this, he placed his crown on
the cock's head, which became his comb.

>From then onwards, the Sun appeared everyday in the
sky and the cock crowed loudly to welcome the Sun. So
when you see the cock with his comb, you know what it
is. Well, he does deserve it, doesn't he?
