Tim,
It is not only a US problem.I think the rest of the world has gone
anti-intellectual too and is more eager to embrace values of
'marketability' and wanting to be safe and popular with the larger crowds.
IT IS indeed very frightening.Where I am, I am fighting my own battle
against a frenzy to please what the market wants (there are students who
enrol in a uni. for the real sake of getting knowledge and not just
wanting a piece of paper to ensure there's food in the fridge/big cars to
drive, etc).
I worry that if we don't watch it,English will continue to be taught
without history, culture or value.We are stuck with "He goes to
school/They go to school" kinda framework (proficiency courses).Surely
English can be taught beyond this?
