Hi, there. Read your thoughts about ESL students with interest. I feel that if the students were to be left to learn phonics on their own, it'll be too impersonal. I feel that communication should be between person to person, not person to machine.

Regarding the comments made on the China Post article, what if ESL students could practice grammar, spelling, phonics, using an online program rather than having a teacher spend classtime doing these lessons, or rather having a teacher spend much less class time on them. The student could study at home or wherever internet connection was available. This would allow the teacher to use the class time role playing and doing other activities that focus more on communicting in English, rather than working from grammar and phonics text books.

Interested in hearing your thoughts.

Thanks for your comments,

I agree with you that a teacher is needed to introduce concepts and new material, but after being an ESL teacher for 4 years, I find that too much time is spent on grammar rules, phonics sounds, spelling, testing, ect... and not enough time is spent on communicating through language (conversation, role playing).

An interactive computer program can easily practice, reinforce, and assess the content that needs to be memorized and reviewed (spelling, phonics sounds, vocabulary, and grammar rules). I strongly feel that a lot of class time with the teacher is wasted on book work, and fill in the blank exercises when it could be used doing conversations, performing plays... more communicative exercises.

My point is not to substitute the teacher with a computer but to use the computer as an effective tool to allow class time to be used more effectively in a more communicative way.

Daniel
