Has anyone used these chats for teaching under 18 year olds...? Is it a suitable medium?

Security concerns aside, perhaps it would be okay with students and teachers in a kind of group discussion... Would it go too fast for people? Last time I tried with a bunch of students, no one could keep up with the main discussion at all.

I tried it with a couple of students who moved away after I taught them for years.

It was fun to catch up with them, but I haven't used it for real teaching yet. I tried it with a group of students, but it wasn't particularly helpful as our instruction was too unfocused, and there were too many technical problems that i couldn't solve because of the remote nature of the medium. I think children would get frustrated by such problems much more quickly than adults.

There has been quite a lot of work on the concept of "synchronous communications"  so do a search for these terms. See what comes up!
